We arrived in Coober Pedy. It’s a place where they mine opals and have homes underground. The houses are underground so the people are cooler because it gets really hot and sunny. We are staying at a place called Ribas.
The second day we were here we went to three underground churches. It’s a weird being underground in a church. They had colourful windows with people on them. My favourite one was the Catholic Church because it was a bit smaller.

We went shopping for opals. There were so many and they were too expensive for me to buy but the next day I went on a mine tour and found some opals. I bought some earrings that were bluey green.
Interesting facts about opal mining
They don’t use explosives anymore. They use drills and tunneling machines. The blower that I saw was like a vacuum cleaner. It had a bit of a car tyre on it. Its slurps up the dirt and tips it above ground.
We used a black light to find the opals. I found the tiny white opals.

After the tour we got in the car and headed to the dog fence. The dog fence is a fence that keeps all the Dingoes out of south Australia.
