NEEM, Dampier Peninsula

When we left Pender Bay we drove down the road 5min to Neem. Neem is a place that you stay on someone’s property. After we booked in Bob(one of the people who lived there) said that we can use the bike’s in the shed. We played with the bike’s until we got asked if we wanted to go fishing on the reef. When the boys were fishing me and Mum went to explore the rockpools. When we were exploring the rockpools we saw teeny, weeny Blue fish, big giant clams and very dangerous cone shells. That night we tried blue bone fish that one of the guys caught. It was yummy. When you filleted it there were blue bones and thats its name.

The next day we got up at 6am to have our breakfast and get ready for our walk with Mena. On the walk we tried bush food and learned about the trees. Mena was part of the stolen generation. In the stolen generation kids were taken from their mums and dads the government thought they weren’t being looked after. Mena got looked after by the nuns. The truck would come and pick them up. On the walk we looked for crab shells under the mangroves. We saw heaps of white big sharp claws from dead mud crabs. When we got back from the walk we had lunch then did some weaving with Mena at the dormitory. We weaved wreaths and shooting stars and made string from grasses. Mum and dad made coasters. It was the first time i did weaving and i thought it was exciting experience. It was lovely for Mena to share it with us. After the weaving we had our showers then went to the campfire. At the campfire isaac, dad and mum tasted turtle. Isaac had six pieces because he loved it so much. We listened to dreamtime stories about an emu that had its wings cut off because he wanted to dance like the brolgas. He then got stuck on the ground forever because he couldn’t fly.

In the morning we got in the back of the ute and went down the driveway to get some leaves from branches to make bush medicine for our itchy bites. When we got back we looked at the vegie garden then headed to the dormitory to do some painting. After we did painting Ray (who took us fishing on the reef) gave us tap sticks.

It was such a lovely place to stay because it felt like they were sharing their lives with us.

Mia, the craft looks great and I love the wreath you made – keep it safe so we can see it when you get home. I’d never think of eating Turtle! You certainly experienced new things during your stay. Xx
